This Rolex Explorer Ref. 5500 is a rare variation, specifically produced for the Canadian market. The Bullseye dial, with a silver central section and a contrasting white outer ring, is what makes this watch stand out. It features Coffin Indexes and Alpha hands, preserving the vintage character of the piece.
The "Precision" marking on the dial would typically correspond to a Caliber 1520, yet this watch is fitted with a Caliber 1530, usually found in "Super Precision" models. However, this discrepancy is consistent with other known examples of the reference, as Rolex did not always adhere to a strict correlation between dial markings and movements.
The dial and hands show oxidation, with scattered spots of patina, yet they maintain a beautiful, balanced aesthetic that enhances their vintage appeal. The lume on both the hands and indices has aged to a warm, aged yellow tone, consistent across the watch and offering a slightly faded yet charming look.
The case has been polished but retains good original proportions. The case back also shows signs of polishing, with scattered scratches and small dents throughout the watch, though they do not significantly impact its overall aesthetic.
The bracelet is in well-worn condition. While originally a Rolex stretch bracelet, it does not feature the 6635 marking on the links. Additionally, the last link closest to the deployant clasp is from a 7205 bracelet. The deployant clasp is dated to the third quarter of 1963, which aligns well with the watch’s production, suggesting that this watch and bracelet were originally paired together.
The acrylic crystal is in good condition, with expected wear but no major defects.
The case, dial, movement, and bracelet are all signed by Rolex, confirming authenticity.
