One of Genta's earliest and most striking contributions to watch design predates his later collaborations with Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe by nearly two decades.
In 1954, when he was just 23 years old, Universal Genève commissioned Genta to design a timepiece commemorating SAS's (Scandinavian Airlines Systems) polar flights from New York/Los Angeles directly to Europe. This iconic watch, initially named the Polarouter and later renamed the Polerouter, gave rise to a highly successful family of timepieces for Universal Genève. To provide context, during the late 1950s, a steel Polerouter was priced equivalently to a Rolex Explorer.
This timepiece is equipped with one of the most prevalent calibers in the Polerouter Date line, specifically the 218-2.
Things you should know
This watch is in fair original condition, as indicated by its reference, featuring a robust and unpolished gold-capped case with scratches throughout, showcasing the marks of a well-lived life. Despite the evident signs of wear, the gold plating remains intact across the entire case. The caseback exhibits deeper signs, attributed to daily wear and attempts to open it. Notably, the Universal logo, reference, and serial numbers remain highly legible with the naked eye.
The crosshair dial boasts a lemon color and displays some signs of wear in the two upper quarters, developing a charming dotted patina overall. The applied logo and dauphine hands are crafted from solid gold. All lume plots have taken on a brownish-almost-black hue but remain intact, except for the one at one o'clock. The lume color on the dial harmonizes with that on the hands.
Importantly, the case, dial, movement, and crown all bear the signature of Universal Genève.
