In the 1970s, a notable shift occurred in watch design, marked by an inclination toward larger cases. While larger profiles were a natural fit for tool watches, creating a dress watch with an expanded diameter that seamlessly integrated into daily business and formal attire posed a challenge. Several Swiss watchmakers, including Audemars Piguet, Cartier, Patek Philippe, Piaget, and Vacheron Constantin, addressed this by experimenting with case shapes such as rectangular, asymmetric, oval, tonneau (barrel), and cushion. These innovative designs were paired with ultra-thin movements, reflecting a trend that became prominent in the era.
While this timepiece may not be revolutionary from shape standpoint, its bracelet takes center stage. The sleek, narrow bezel enhances the impact of the uncluttered dial, featuring minimalistic baton markers that create a striking contrast with the opulent bracelet adorned with a Florentine-style finish.
Things you should know
This watch is in exceptionally beautiful and original condition. The case remains robust with very faint scratches. The dial is well-preserved, showing only two minor stains near the baton markers at two and eight o'clock, which are barely visible to the naked eye. The crystal is in excellent condition, and the text appears to be still sharp.
While the overall condition of the bracelet is impressive, the section without the clasp has a slight bend, causing it not to sit perfectly flat on a table. However, this is imperceptible when the watch is worn on the wrist.
The clasp features the AP logo, adding to the overall appeal of the timepiece.
