This Longines 30CH Chronograph is a truly distinctive piece, notable for being an early "Fab. Suisse" model produced for the French market. Due to stringent export restrictions on gold from Switzerland to France, Longines sent 30CH movements with gold pushers and crowns in stainless steel cases. Upon arrival in France, these movements were disassembled and reassembled into locally crafted gold cases, marked by the eagle’s head hallmark, which on this watch is discreetly placed on the case edge beneath the case back and on one lug. Additionally, this unique pieces were stamped with “Fab. Suisse” rather than the usual “Swiss Made” at six o’clock, reflecting their special designation for France. These distinctive characteristics, combined with a case style exclusive to the French models, make this watch both rare and highly sought after by collectors.
This particular Longines 30CH Chronograph is in exceptional, attractive condition. The case is sharp and unpolished, with light scratches that highlight the character of the piece. The facets on the lugs and case back remain well-defined, with only a few superficial dings. Notably, the pusher at two o'clock has a more pronounced ding, though it does not detract from the watch’s aesthetic appeal or functionality in any way.
The dial is truly the star of this watch. It features a beautiful two-tone design, with a silvered ring displaying the hour markers and numerals, adding depth and elegance. The dial has aged gracefully to a soft, light cream tone, with minimal aging spots that are primarily visible under strong lighting—adding a subtle, authentic charm. The rose gold hands and hour markers have developed a light, attractive patina, particularly around the 6 and 12 o’clock numerals, further enhancing the vintage appeal. The Plexiglass shows a couple of superficial scratches, a minor one at four o'clock. The gold crown is a later replacement and it's not the one that was originally issued with the watch.
The dial, case, and movement are all signed by Longines, underscoring the watch’s authenticity and heritage.
