Datejust 1601 Linen dial
The Blueprint
The Condition Report
This Rolex Datejust, reference 1601, is a steel and gold execution dating to early 1972. Its production period is doubly confirmed both by the serial number and the internal caseback engraving "I.72," indicating it was manufactured in the first quarter of that year. The defining characteristic of this timepiece is its exceptional Linen dial, a texture that provides a sophisticated, fabric-like depth and remains in remarkable aesthetic condition.
The 36mm case maintains its vintage integrity, with thick lugs that still display the correct factory-style brushed finish. The fluted gold bezel has softened slightly over the decades, acquiring a striking deep orange patina. This natural oxidation gives the yellow gold a warm, rich tone that leans toward a rose gold hue, creating a beautiful contrast with the steel case.
The silver linen dial is the standout feature, notably well-preserved for a textured surface of this age. Both the tritium plots on the dial and the inserts in the hands have aged with perfect consistency, showing a uniform color match across the entire face of the watch.
The watch shows honest signs of wear consistent with its age and history. Notably, there is a more distinct mark on the polished flank of the case at the 9 o'clock position, along with some superficial scratches on the caseback. In the interest of preserving the original case geometry and its unpolished state, these marks have been left untouched. The movement is in excellent health, having recently undergone a full professional service.
Performance Log
The technical values listed below are merely a snapshot recorded in the "Dial Up" position. Variations in amplitude or rate compared to modern standards are physiological for vintage timepieces.
Furthermore, strictly adhering to our philosophy of preservation, we prioritize retaining original components whenever possible, even if this results in slightly lower performance metrics, provided they do not compromise the reliability and correct functioning of the timepiece.
